Heading for Frijoles, yesterday. I observed multiple runs with DC10’s and MD-87s, another smaller jet, prop planes, helicopters. Choreographed full-on aerial assault. It was needed - no clouds in the morning or early afternoon, high heat, variable winds blowing towards populated areas. One could see fire intensifying by the minute. Then the assault started, and the smoke abated. Instead of rising in columns, flattened close to the landscape.

Thanks to air resources, we dodged a bullet yesterday. Thank you to the air crews and ground personnel. And all the firefighters.

Chance of rain/clouds over the fire area, 50% today. Let’s hope.

I feel this is objectively poor public fire intelligence: nearby residents are being shown an acreage number that plainly no longer describes the active footprint.

Folks, you need to know that the official updates to the Frijoles fire are lagging badly. We’ve got a large fire within a couple of miles of two communities, six miles of a larger one. A fire perimeter nearly 24 hours old is not adequate situational awareness for residents.

Storm, not wildfire. Fifteen minutes ago (7:45pm).

Recent chuckle … a younger colleague was exclaiming over a wild looking ‘old airplane.’ I looked over his shoulder. A Lockheed Constellation. The first commercial airliner I ever took a trip on. And got vomitously ill in. I remember the odor of raw puke while looking at those awesome spinning props.
